Ollama
Ollama is an open source tool that runs large language models (LLMs) locally, on your own machine or server. Connected to Opera, it lets you use the Maestro assistant without relying on the cloud, keeping your conversations and your data entirely private.
How do I connect Ollama to Opera locally?
1 / Install Ollama on your computer or server
Before connecting Ollama to Opera, start by installing it on your machine.
- Download Ollama: ollama.com
- Run the installer and follow the instructions.
2 / Download an AI model
Once Ollama is installed, download an AI model.
- Open the terminal on your machine.
- Type the following command:
ollama run llama3
3 / Share Ollama on your local network
Ollama has to be visible on the network so that it can talk to Opera.
- In the Ollama app, turn on the « Expose Ollama to the network » option.
- Note your machine's IP address (
ipconfigon Windows, ipconfig getifaddr en0on Mac,hostname -Ion Linux). - Note the Ollama port (
11434by default).
4 / Check that everything works
Open the terminal and type the following command: curl http://localhost:11434/api/tags
You should get a JSON response listing the tags of the AI models available.
5 / Connect Opera to Ollama
Now that Ollama is running, connect it to Opera.
- Open Opera, then go to « Settings » → « Service » → « Ollama » → « Add a server ».
- Enter your local Ollama address (e.g.:
http://[IP_ADDRESS]:11434).
MCP servers
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets an assistant talk to outside tools and data sources: your files, a calendar, a code repository, an internal API, through a single interface. Connected to Opera, an MCP server widens what the assistant can reach, while the servers you add and the access you grant them stay yours to decide.
How do I connect an MCP server to Opera?
1 / Open the server list in Opera
MCP servers are managed from Opera's tools.
- Open Opera, then go to « Tools » → « MCP servers » → « Add new server ».
2 / Point Opera at the server you want
Look up the MCP server that covers what you need, then hand Opera its details.
- Search the web for the MCP server you are after.
- Enter its address, or paste its
mcp.jsonconfiguration.
Assistant overlay
The assistant overlay puts Maestro on top of whatever you are doing on Android. Instead of switching to the Opera app, you summon a small floating window over your current screen, ask your question, and dismiss it, all without leaving what you were doing. Like the rest of Opera, it runs entirely on your device: nothing you type into the overlay leaves your phone.
What can the assistant overlay do?
Circle to ask
Circle anything on your screen, a photo, a paragraph, a button, and ask the assistant about it.
QR code scan
Point the overlay at a QR code shown on screen to read it, without switching to a separate scanner app.
Text selector
Select text anywhere on screen through the overlay and copy it, even in apps that do not normally let you select text.
